I recently watched Ruby Sparks, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, with my girlfriend, as we both have a love for romantic comedies. The film features Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan in the lead roles of Calvin Weir-Fields and Ruby Sparks. The story follows Calvin, a novelist struggling with writer’s block, who one day writes about a woman from his dreams, only to find that she magically appears in his life. The twist is that Ruby is completely unaware of her fictional life and Calvin’s control over her. The film dives into some darker themes, specifically concerning the extent of Calvin’s control over Ruby through his writing. While the premise is certainly intriguing, I found it uncomfortable to see Calvin manipulate Ruby’s feelings and actions to such extremes. Nonetheless, if you’re interested in the concept I would definitely recommend watching the film only if you feel comfortable with dark themes!
